London's vintage and homepage (Read the Full Guide) retro treasures are among my favorite things about the city. You can find an original birthday gift or a retro Christmas present, or something more unique than a high-street gift set, London is a dream for anyone who appreciates nostalgia and the glimmer of the past.

One of my most-loved weekend rituals is wandering through the city's antique market. Portobello Road always tops my list, not just due to its vibrant chaos, but also for the sheer variety. There's everything from mid-century homeware to enamel kitchen tins to classic vinyl records that still jangle with life. I've lost track of how many times I've left with "just one gift" which turned into a bag of treasures.

For something that is more well-curated, I frequently head to Shoreditch and Islington. These areas are home to boutiques of vintage that specialize in particular eras -- a 1970s lighting store here and a shop devoted to 1940s fashion there. It's the kind of browsing experience where you end up talking to the proprietor of the shop for half an hour about the history of a lamp, or the origins of a satchel made of leather.

Maker's marks, original labels and even a bit of wear and tear add a certain character. London's antique dealers are usually eager to tell the story behind the piece. The story is usually included in the gift. Imagine giving a scarf that once travelled across Europe in the 1950s, or a typewriter which tapped out love letters from decades ago -- it turns the gift into a piece of living history.

Of course, a large part of the fun is mixing old with the contemporary. I often combine a vintage home accent with contemporary packaging or fresh flowers to give it a modern look. It's a wonderful way make something old feel exciting while still honouring its origins.

London also has amazing seasonal fairs, particularly during the Christmas season.
